Top 5 Performing Stocks in the S&P 500 (VLO, DHI, HES, JCP, BTU)

Below are the top five performing stocks in the S&P 500 INDEX,RTH. These companies should be watched for additional outperformance to the upside.

Valero Energy (NYSE:VLO) lead the charge up 10.85% today, well above the S&P 500's return of 0.41% thus far. Just behind are shares of DR Horton (NYSE:DHI), which is up 9.53%.

Rounding out the list of outperformers are shares of Hess (NYSE:HES) and JC Penney (NYSE:JCP), which are up 8.66% and 8.64%, respectively. Finally we have Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU) up a respectable 5.45% on the day.

Valero Energy Corporation is an independent petroleum refining and marketing company that owns and operates refineries in the United States, Canada, and Aruba. The Company produces conventional gasolines, distillates, jet fuel, asphalt, petrochemicals, lubricants, and other refined products as well as diesel fuel, low-sulfur and ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, and oxygenates.

Valero Energy (NYSE:VLO) is currently priced 1.2% above its average consensus analyst price target of $41.53. The stock should find initial support at its 50-day moving average (MA) of $33.65 and further support at its 200-day MA of $28.42.
